How a Risk Management Firm Achieved 50–70% Faster Data Processing with Medallion Architecture

John David

This case study details how Sparity helped a leading Risk Management Services firm overcome the challenges of an outdated, on-premises data infrastructure. The client was struggling with fragmented data and scalability issues from their legacy systems, which led to inconsistent reporting and heightened compliance risks. By migrating and transforming the client's data ecosystem into a modern, cloud-native platform using Azure and Databricks, Sparity successfully implemented the Medallion Architecture. The solution delivered significant improvements, including a 50-70% reduction in data processing time, 40% better compliance, and a 30% reduction in total cost of ownership.

Client: Risk Management Firm

Services: Data & Analytics

Year: 2025

Client Background

A Leading Risk Management Services firm, with expertise in compliance monitoring, fraud detection, and financial risk assessments, was held back by on-premises SQL Server and rigid SSIS pipelines. The fragmented data across ERP, CRM, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server systems, lead to scalability issues, inconsistent reporting, and heightened compliance risks due to absence of governance and version control.

Project Objectives

  • Transform the existing on-premises legacy into a cloud-native, scalable, and resilient platform.
  • Migrate and standardize data from fragmented ERP, CRM, and operational applications into governed and auditable data pipelines.
  • Facilitate prompt insights to assist in compliance monitoring, fraud detection, and financial risk assessment.

Solution & Implementation

We reimagined the client’s data ecosystem using Azure and Databricks, with the Medallion Architecture (Bronze → Silver → Gold) at the core:

5-step data modernization process: Data Ingestion, Data Lake, Databricks Unity Catalog, Delta Lake, and Power BI Dashboards workflow for risk management firms
  • Migrated SSIS data pipelines to Azure Data Factory for orchestrated data ingestion from cloud and on-premises sources.
  • Integrated raw and curated datasets in Azure Data Lake Gen2 for scalable, cost-effective storage.
  • Implemented Databricks utilizing Unity Catalog for improved governance, security, and lineage visibility.
  • Leveraged Delta Lake for ACID transactions, schema evolution, and version history.
  • Rebuilt the Power BI dashboards with semantic models, direct query, and row level security to provide governed, real-time insight.

Medallion Architecture benefits visualization showing 50-70% processing speed improvement, 40% compliance enhancement, and 30% TCO reduction
  • 50–70% quicker data processing, reducing ETL latency and improving reporting timelines.
  • 40% better compliance posture, fueled by governance, lineage transparency, and fine-grained RBAC.
  • 30% reduction in total cost of ownership (TCO) through elastic compute, storage efficiency, and reduced infra overhead.
