Overview

The healthcare client approached Sparity, intending to transform their transcription capabilities. The healthcare client was using expensive in-house medical transcriptionists (MTs). However, the transcription was transcribed manually, which is prone to human error and leads to an increase in the cost of operation. Sparity acted quickly and implemented speech recognition technology to convert the spoken word of the doctor to written text from models developed solely from the medical transcription environment that can be stored in the cloud.

Challenges

The healthcare client was experiencing difficulty in handling their transcription process and was looking for a solution that could automate the transcription process and transcribe the reports of their patients. Physicians have to write lengthy paperwork containing patient records such as diagnosis, treatment notes etc. and had to record all the data of a patient in the EHR (Electronic Health Record) system manually. The healthcare client used expensive in-house medical transcriptionists (MTs) and sometimes outsourced transcription companies to meet workflow fluctuations. Furthermore, the dictation system in use was outdated, unreliable, and expensive, requiring continual maintenance. Both clinicians and administration staff found the transcription process tedious and unsatisfactory.

As a clinician dictates, the solution interprets and formats the dictation to translate what is intended to be included in the document, not necessarily what was said. Additionally, the solution makes editing easy and fast through features such as keyboard shortcuts and audio speed controls. Furthermore, the solution received continuous feedback from MTs’ edits that continuously enhances the speech recognition engine capabilities to produce better drafts over time.
